Why have my precription compounded?

There are many reasons why a patient may have their prescription compounded either for themselves or a loved one, including their child. At VCP, we compound customized medications from scratch so they can be customized to patients specific needs.

For instance, if the patient has an allergy to a preservative or dye that is found in the commercially available medication, we can make a prescription free of these ingredients with the same effect. In another case, a patient may have difficulty taking medication in capsule form, we could then make it available in one of our other equally efficient dispensing methods.

Also if you have a child or loved one who doesn’t enjoy the taste of their medicine, we offer several flavors to help the process go down easier. Some of our more popular flavors include bubble gum, tutti frutti and cherry for the kids, chicken, fish and pork for pets and chocolate and even Kahlua for adults.

At Village Compounding Pharmacy we don’t just fill your prescription, we are your partner in achieving your health goals. Our staff of highly trained pharmacists and technicians, state-of-the-art equipment and sterile labs ensure patients receive the highest level of quality, safety and personal attention including expert consultations and continued patient education.

7 Reasons to Make Water Your Drink of Choice

Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water.

Here’s 7 reasons why water should be your drink of choice:

1. Relieves Fatigue - Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body. If your body lacks water, your heart, for instance, needs to work harder to pump out the oxygenated blood to all cells, so are the rest of the vital organs, your organs will be exhausted and so will you.

2. Helps with Weight Loss – drinking it before a meal can help you feel full faster, plus it has zero calories.

3. Hydrated Skin = Healthy Skin. Water helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturizes skin and increases skin elasticity.

4. More Energy – Helps energize your muscles.

5. Steady Body Temperature - Dehydration can throw off our regulatory systems and can make the body’s temperature unbalanced.

6. Your Kidneys Will Thank You – water helps your kidneys clean your body and rid it of toxins.

7. Stay Regular – Fiber and water goes hand in hand so that you can have your daily bowel movement.

Autism Hits 1 in 88 U.S. Kids, 1 in 54 Boys

April is autism awareness month. A recent article from webmd informs us that one in every 88 U.S. children — and one in 54 boys — has autism, the CDC now estimates.

The latest analysis, from a 2008 survey, shows autism is up 23% since 2006 and 78% since 2002.

“This is a large number of children and families affected by autism,” study leader Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp, MD, chief of the CDC’s developmental disabilities branch, tells WebMD.

“With nearly a doubling of prevalence since CDC started tracking in 1992, autism is officially becoming an epidemic in the U.S. We are dealing with a national emergency that is in need of a national plan,” Mark Roithmayr, president of the advocacy group Autism Speaks, said at a CDC teleconference held to announce the findings.

More autism research and better services for people living with autism will be expensive. But the cost of autism already is astronomical, according to preliminary findings from an Autism Speaks-funded study by Martin Knapp, PhD, of the London School of Economics, and David Mandell, ScD, of the University of Pennsylvania.

At the new 2008 prevalence rate of one in 88 American children, autism costs the U.S. $137 billion a year. It has been estimated that 45% of Americans with autism have an intellectual disability. The lifetime cost for each person who has an intellectual disability related to autism is $2.3 million, Knapp and Mandell estimate.

Anethesia drug shortages can be a real pain

Although cancer drug shortages have gotten a lot of attention lately, an even larger reaching group of drugs is experiencing a shortage that could affect everything from your dentist doing a filling to more major surgical operations, such as cesarian sections.

Reports of anesthetic shortages — the drugs that put you out and/or control pain — have medical institutions nationwide rationing their stocks and finding other drugs to manage the shortage. Still, these methods can come with side effects for patients and can even be uncomfortable for doctors to use due to their unfamiliarity, according to the blaze.

President elect of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists Dr. Michael Simon said that the medications doctors and nurses are used to using everyday and were trained with “are falling into shortages that we don’t see them for weeks or months at a time.”

In the midst of an anesthetic drug shortage, some physicians are turning to compound pharmacies rather than drug companies for supplies, according to a KTHV report.

Rather than sell manufactured drugs, compounding pharmacies offer prescriptions custom- formulated by pharmacists based on patient needs. The report, based out of Little Rock, Ark., said that compounding pharmacies are becoming increasingly conventional sources for prescriptions among physicians in the state.
